Home Cooking

Did you know that our favorite bagoong by Barrio Fiesta dominates the local market 65% market share, and at 95% share for the international market in 2019?

Barrio Fiesta sees bright spot in rise of ‘home cooks,’ online entrepreneurs amid pandemic

Truly a top favorite among condiments here in the Philippines and even abroad. But with the COVID19 pandemic, most businesses are forced to shut down. But as a true blue-Filipino, this brand has found a silver lining—pushing through with an expansion plan despite challenging times.

Prime Global Corporation (PGC) is taking on the “new normal” with optimism as it leverages Filipinos’ rekindled love for home-cooking and the rise of the home-based food delivery business amid dine-out and movement restrictions to boost sales of its Barrio Fiesta products.

Adjusting to a changed food business landscape, Barrio Fiesta has recalibrated its sales approach, upping its online presence as it continues to diversify its product portfolio, from its top-selling shrimp paste to new sauces, spreads, dry mixes, and snacks.

“Fortunately for the packaged food category, we are seeing growth opportunities still as people continue to remain at home, opting for home-cooked meals and seeing the rise of ‘home chefs.’ We anticipate that the ‘new normal’ will continue to bring about more interest, creativity and enthusiasm for lutong-bahay recipes, and we want to be there for them,” said Reychelle Ann Gigante, PGC Marketing Head.

Barrio Fiesta via their social media pages is providing Filipino cooks lutong-bahay recipes and tips, noting the many that are still locked down at home are shifting their budgets to home-cooked meals while small entrepreneurs have gone into the online food business in place of lost livelihood.

This is where PGC saw an opportunity to help while selling its products in the safest possible way: no on-site promotional events and mostly a virtual interface with its target market.

“All on-ground activities have been cancelled, current digital content efforts have been geared towards engaging our online audience with useful recipes and tips using our products, and recently we opened our Facebook page to online bulk orders for those who would be interested to resell Barrio Fiesta products within their community,” Gigante said.

PGC has also shifted to digital marketing, seeing greater spending on online promotional ventures as the pandemic continues. At the same time, it maintains presence in physical stores—its primary trade channel—to cater to Filipinos who still opt to shop outside. Barrio Fiesta products are available in supermarkets, groceries, convenience stores, drug stores and sari-sari-stores.

While we very much acknowledge the important role that e-commerce has played during the new normal, we also understand that there is still a great need for general and modern trade or supermarkets and groceries and it is very much essential for us as well as it still caters to Filipinos who opt to shop in brick-and-mortar stores. For us, it won’t be one or the other, as this multi-channel availability will allow us to reach our customers in the most convenient way possible,” Gigante said.

PGC counts on the Filipinos’ familiarity with its heritage products to remain as the go-to brand for staple condiments even amid the rise of artisanal, home-made brands, given the scope of its production and distribution reach.

“We are aware that there are small online entrepreneurs selling specialty or artisanal bagoong and condiments, and this just goes to show how huge and dynamic the food market is,” Gigante said. “As for specialty condiments, at the moment, Barrio Fiesta is the only brand able to produce and distribute its products at scale commercially, across local and international markets, while maintaining high quality and authentic taste, made possible with a strong business model.”

“Our goal this year is to further dominate the category in both domestic and international markets. And in the next three years, we aspire to be among the top local companies in the sauces, dressings, condiments and package foods categories,” said Vincent Ace Villa-Real, President and Chief Operating Officer of PGC.

“The Barrio Fiesta retail brand is one of the few remaining Filipino heritage brands whose equity can cut across the broad spectrum of the culinary and food industries. We intend to make the most of the equity. We can’t be a single product company; category expansion whether organic or thru external synergies is a given,” Villa-Real said.

Hortaleza, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hortaleza Corporation; and Alexone A. Hortaleza, Vice President for Customer & Business Development  - Philippine Operations of Prime Global Corporation

The manufacturing business of Barrio Fiesta sautéed shrimp paste was acquired by the Ang-Hortaleza Corporation through a subsidiary in 2011. The brand is now under Prime Global Corporation, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution a subsidiary company owned by the Hortaleza Corporation holding company.

Earlier this year, it released its own version of everyday condiments and snacks: the Barrio Fiesta Gourmet Series Patis (fish sauce), Barrio Fiesta Tubasuk (spiced sugar cane vinegar), Barrio Fiesta Crispy Joy Breading Mix, Barrio Fiesta Peanut Butter Spreads, Barrio Fiesta Chicken and Beef Broth Cubes, and Barrio Fiesta Jumbo Roasted Peanuts.

“We are optimistic because Barrio Fiesta is a very strong retail brand offering products with superior taste, quality, and value supported by a vision and a business model that is anchored on strong fundamentals,” Villa-Real added.

Super Quick & Easy ISTAPEGGI Recipe 🍝

ISTAPEGGI is another word for Spaghetti here in the Philippines. Filipino loves spaghetti so much that there are tons of different versions from every region. Some like it sweet, some want it meaty, some like it saucy, some like it cheesy. As a work from home mom, aside from wanting it delicious, I like quick and easy recipes. That's why here I am sharing the tips and tricks for a Quick & Easy / Budget-Friendly ISTAPEGGI (Spaghetti) Recipe.

Let's get started!
📣 Woooot!

Here are the "Sangkap"  ingredients you'll need:

Make it 2 or 4 este, more para mas meaty 😉
✅ 1/2kg Spaghetti Noddles
✅ 1/2kg Spaghetti Sauce

Optional: Cheese for topping

CDO Karne Norte is "Sarap Guisado" already, may built-in oil din from the Karne Norte, kaya no need for extra mantika, bawang at sibuyas 👌

But, it's up to you naman 😉 to include Cooking Oil / Garlic / Onion.
Pwede din i-substitute ng any pang'gisa instant mix of your choice.

Tara, at Lutuan Portion na! 👩‍🍳

  1. Cook spaghetti noodles according to package instruction. Then drain the pasta and set aside.
  2. In a separate and preheated cooking pan, cook CDO Karne Norte. or Gisa'gisa like the nakagawian👍

Currently on Day 3 of the GCQ (General Community Quarantine) + 3 months of ECQ (Community Quarantine, how have you been? If you'll ask me, there are even times that I don't even know what day is it. But during these trying times may we all remain to have faith in God, and a little bit stronger than before and let's continue to hang in there. May we all stick together but of course being minded of the safety precautions, keeping a healthy mind, and body + social distancing pa and this: Always making sure every special moment still counts. Cherish those moments pa din always with your family, loved ones, or dear friends.

Celebrating during these times doesn't necessarily mean to be grand. We can level up a simple meal by giving a little thought by adding creaminess by using your favorite cheese. Just like today, we are all feeling productive and thankful as my homeschooling girls are about to finish their remaining PACES.  So I look around our kitchen to see what I can to do make a leveled up snack with ingredients readily available at home. Then I saw these 3-days old pandesal.

  1. Crushed and finely chopped some garlic,
  2. Add some butter, and whip till fluffy.
  3. Spread it on the Pandesals.
  4. Topped with Grated Cheese
  5. Oven-bake for a few minutes And done!
Walang oven? Pwede naman sa toaster, Pwede din sa kawali, takpan lang using metal lid. Mas crunchy ang crust but di ko mapapromise na maachieve and pag broiwn ng cheese sa top huh :) pero I bet enjoyable pa din ito.

How to Cook Creamy Carbonara Budgetarian Style?

Indulging yourself to your favorite food and cravings during ECQ is kinda hard. Bukod sa limited budget, limited din ang ingredients sa market. But if you were like me na food and weakness, gagawa at gagawa ng paraan to get those cravings satisfied and to keep my sanity kahit budgeted pa yan.

I stumble upon Canva Kitchen Online's Saan aabot ang P250 mo? pa'ulam challenge and that Gutom ka na ba? easy recipe edition by Chefs' Lon, Nico, and Russell.

How to Cook Creamy Carbonara Budgetarian Style?

Canva is an online design platform that prides itself on having an in-house chef and providing nutritious meals for its employees but with the recently imposed enhanced community quarantine, it had to replicate its Canva Kitchen online.

How to Cook Creamy Carbonara Budgetarian Style?

Carbonara is our fave pasta dish ever!
That's why when we are browsing for what recipe to recreate at Canva Vibe Alive page, Carbonara is a Must!

Watch Me!

I followed all the steps. (I kinda think, yas!) minus the spicy tuna, para kid-friendly. minus the cheese for ingredients too kasi wala mabili. Also, the pasta must be drained right away. Yung inutusan ko kasi nalibang sa pinapanood nya, ayun medyo overcooked. But still, the dish we recreated was super creamy, and yummy. I and my kids loved it. We are actually eyeing for the next recipe to recreate.

Stay tuned for more tipid recipe making our ECQ life way better!

Only a few days left before Christmas, Ready na ba ang Christmas Dinner menu mo? As for me, I don't worry much. Not because I'm an expert in the kitchen, cause I'm not. I leave all hassle of cooking to my Pappi and Mudrabells, my father and mother.  Pappi is super good at cooking. Talo nya si Mudra :P Sorry Ma! The best ang Mechado nya, Leche Flan, Paksiw na Pata and that oh so yummy Lechon Kawali that whenever he cooks it, me and my siblings shouts for joy and armed with blankets in the sala while waiting for it and watching tv at the same time. Now, why blankets? it's because abot ang talsik ng mantika sa TV area. Also, we are guarding the Lechon Kawali with our lives, Mahirap na magkalamangan sa parte. Awwww, those were the days, the happy days. But Pappi is no longer around and Mudra is away, so the cooking part is left to my younger sister and its oh so terrible. Just Kidding! It's ok at least it's edible.

So how do I manage in preparing Christmas Dinner for my very own Family? Listen closely, cause I'm here to tell my deepest darkest secret in this kind of matter. Brace yourself, and wag kayong mabibigla. Are you ready?

#1 I look for easy recipes on the internet or food magazine or at the recipes found at the back of my favorite canned goods or sachets of products. As in super easy like add hot water ganon.

#2 I am always on the lookout for sulit and tasty party packs from food fairs, and the groceries.

#3 A lifesaver, Takeout trays from our favorite Restaurants.

#4 Also another lifesaver Food Delivery, lalo na kung di ka na makalabas sa sobrang last minute at daming gagawin.

#5 Last but not the least. My very tried and tested tip and usually my last resort, Call Mudra for Help or umasa sa padala ng relatives.

Yay! nakakahiya  hahahahaha. (^.^,)
But wait, I'm a home baker so bumabawi na lang ako sa desserts which always works.

But wait there's more!!!
This Holiday season will be way different for me. For I find something really nice, tasty, and so easy to prepare. A dish that not just for the holidays, but can be for any day that you want to be a li'l extra special is also our family favorite and I bet yours too. The Purefoods Heat & Eat Lechon Kawali and Crispy Pata.

As I've said I am on the lookout for great food finds to serve this Christmas on our Noche Buena. I've searched facebook and stumble into this.

From the makers of that well-loved hotdogs that truly kids can tell the juicy difference and that awesome aroma of their corned beef, Purefoods continues to offer easy yet delicious meals for Filipinos providing them more time to spend with their families instead of devouring so much time cooking not to mention the extra for the preps.

Today, Purefoods introduces another product that surely most Filipinos will love. A new addition to its Purefoods Heat & Eat line. Ideally made for busy moms and dads, for working peeps, and even to moms like me who can't cook but wants something great to be served in their table,  also for pretty much just the uncompromising convenience seeker in all of us.

Cook like a "Pro" this Christmas with Purefoods Heat & Eat Lechon Kawali and Crispy Pata

Seafood has always been part of every Pinoy's favorite meal due to having an abundant supply in the agricultural and fisheries sector. It provides various health benefits due to the vitamins and minerals it contains such as iron, zinc, iodine, vitamin B1, folic acid, and especially the omega-3 fatty acids that is known to prevent heart diseases.

The fat in seafood also combats other diseases such as:
Arthritis, Asthma, Diabetes, Lupus, Prostate tumors and Breast cancer. Apart from the nutrients seafood offers, it also helps to easily achieve a healthy and fit lifestyle because it has less calories and fat compared to chicken, pork, and beef.  Clearly, the healthiest choice there is.
