Accelerating Journey toward Carbon Neutrality, Company Continues Efforts to Realize ESG Vision of ‘Better Life for All’

LG Joins RE100 Initiative, Committing to Transition to Renewable Energy

LG Electronics (LG) has joined RE100 (Renewable Energy 100), a global initiative advocating for businesses to convert to 100 percent renewable energy for all their electricity requirements. The decision to become an RE100 member is yet another example of its strong commitment to sustainability and to fulfilling its responsibilities as a global corporate citizen.

The company has finalized plans to convert all its business sites to 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. To reach this goal, LG will gradually increase its usage of electricity from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power, to 60 percent by 2030 and 90 percent by 2040, arriving at its target of 100 percent by 2050.

Along with expanding the generation and usage of renewable energy via the installation of high-efficiency solar panels at LG offices and manufacturing facilities, the company will be implementing a variety of additional measures, such as acquiring renewable energy certificates (RECs), signing renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs) and, in South Korea, paying Korea Electric Power Corporation’s (KEPCO) green premium.

As part of its ongoing efforts in this area, last year, LG signed a direct PPA with GS EPS, a Korean power generation company, to build a solar power station equivalent to the size of three soccer fields on the roof of the existing integrated production building at LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea by 2025. Some solar panels have already been installed and have generated power for select buildings since last December. Around the world, the company has installed solar panels on rooftops of several of its offices, including the LG Sciencepark R&D complex in Seoul, South Korea; the North American Headquarters campus in New Jersey, USA; LG India’s office building in greater Noida, India; and the Rayong home appliance factory in Thailand.

LG had already established plans to speed up its transition to renewable energy and accelerate its journey toward carbon neutrality. By converting to renewable energy, the company is also reducing indirect carbon (scope 2) emissions generated while using power. In 2019, LG announced its Zero Carbon 2030 pledge to reach net-zero (direct and indirect) carbon dioxide emissions (scope 1 and 2) by the year 2030.

“Through ongoing efforts and innovation, LG is well on its way to achieving its goals of converting to 100 percent renewable energy and becoming a carbon neutral business,” said Lee Sam-soo, chief strategy officer at LG Electronics. “LG remains fully committed to realizing its ESG vision of creating a Better Life for All.

Life's about more than having the latest technology, rather, it's about the experiences technology creates that impact our lives. LG Electronics Philippines delivers consumer electronics through top-of-the-line home entertainment, home appliances, and air solution products that prepare Filipinos for their greatest moments. LG promises to bring "Innovation for a Better Life" nationwide - from Luzon, to Visayas, and Mindanao.

Recycling is a word that Filipinos are familiar with. In keeping with local waste management needs, many recycling industries have been developing in the Philippines.  In the new episode of the YouTube series Miming and Friends, the process of recycling is explored more.  This aims to help kids understand how they can make an impact, and families to know how else their plastic waste can be recycled in their communities.

Miming and Friends, led by Cat-Fish Miming, flying lizard Buboy, and Unicorn Anacorn, is an animated YouTube channel. Their video topics include values, how to count and sing, and the importance of caring for each other and the environment - all from the multilingual and multicultural perspective of the Filipino experience. The channel is the creation of Miming and Fwends Animation Studios, formed by partners Ramon and Meryll del Prado from Dumaguete, Negros Oriental.

In 2022, Miming and Friends partnered with snacks company Mondelez Philippines to create content about waste management at home to serve as educational materials for children and their families. Mondelez Philippines is the maker of beloved snack products such as Tang, Eden Cheese, Cheez Whiz, Oreo, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Toblerone and Chips Ahoy! to name a few. With a legacy of 60 years in the Philippines, the Company’s purpose has been to empower people to snack right, with the right snack, for the right moment, and made the right way. Making snacks the right way means growing their business with a positive impact for people and the planet. One of the Company’s focus areas is using less packaging for their products, utilizing better packaging, and helping improve systems for waste management and recycling.

Miming and Friends for the Extended Producer Responsibility Law

Information and education campaigns like the partnership with Miming and Friends are one of the ways Mondelez Philippines complies with the Extended Producer Responsibility on Plastic Packaging Waste Law or the EPR Law. This newly passed law establishes a national policy on adopting a systemic, comprehensive, and ecological solid waste management program. Among other provisions, identified companies such as Mondelez Philippines are required to retrieve and divert 20% of their total plastic output starting this year. “Beyond compliance, we have pledged to not only achieve what is required by law but as much as 100% of our plastic packaging output for the year 2023,” shares Caitlin Punzalan, CGA Lead of Mondelez Philippines. “In addition, we employ information and education campaigns like our partnership with the Miming and Friends series, which is geared to inform our consumers of among others, responsible management of plastic waste.”

Continuing Partnership with Save Philippine Seas

Providing waste management knowledge for the Miming and Friends series is Save Philippine Seas (SPS), led by Executive Director and “Chief Mermaid” Anna Oposa. SPS is an organization that aims to empower citizens towards environmental consciousness, leading to collective action, and behavior change. “The first episode of our partnership launched last year was about waste segregation. Proper waste segregation increases the chances of materials finding their way to their own recycling streams.  While there is much to be developed, we have a growing recycling industry here in the Philippines. This episode aims to encourage us all to find partners in our communities, from individual waste collectors to junk shops, and work with them to ensure our waste does not end up in oceans.”

GMA and Nestlé PH launched Reduce, Reuse, Recycle advocacy campaign through Kalikasanovela series

The plastic waste crisis has been a longstanding environmental problem in the country largely due to the gaps in solid waste management (SWM) systems, including recovery, segregation, and recycling. According to the World Bank, 2.7 million tons of plastic waste is generated in the Philippines each year. We also have one of the highest rates of mismanaged plastic waste globally, resulting in plastics ending up as litter and in landfills, and eventually leaking into bodies of water.

As a way to help address this, GMA Network and Nestlé Philippines forged a partnership for the planet with the aim to promote proper SWM and engage more Filipinos in building a movement for environmental sustainability through educational content. One of its highlights is the launch of the Kalikasanovela series starring SPARKLE artists.

Through four 30-second videos, GMA and Nestlé PH tapped on the Filipinos’ love of entertainment and storytelling to communicate the importance of the 3Rs—reducing, reusing and recycling plastic waste—and inspire consumers to embrace their role as stewards for the planet.

“Today marks a milestone as we launch Kalikasanovela, a fusion of our love for storytelling with our love for the environment. It is our belief in GMA that we need a concerted and cooperative effort to save our Earth and keep it livable. This is why our partnership with Nestle is very significant for us. With our complementary strengths and the same vision, we hope to encourage as many Filipinos to be more responsible in their everyday living and be kinder to our environment,” said Angel Javier Cruz, Vice President and Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications of GMA Network.

Each Kalikasanovela episode makes use of a well-loved Filipino movie and TV series genre to tell a short story about plastic waste. It also shows Nestlé PH’s initiatives and milestones in addressing the plastic waste crisis, including upcycling sachets into school chairs, reducing plastic in their product packaging, collecting and diverting over 60 million kilos of plastic waste from the environment, and educating its employees to reduce, reuse, and recycle plastics in their homes.

In celebration of Earth Day, GMA Network and Nestlé Philippines launched the Kalikasanovela last April 17, 2023, wherein– together with Sparkle artists Bianca Umali, Ruru Madrid, Sofia Pablo and Allen Ansay who starred in Kalikasanovela episodes KatokIbaon, and Sirena, respectively talked about their experiences and learnings from participating in the project.

“As artists, it’s our responsibility to use our platforms influence for good, especially when it comes to matters concerning the environment. Being part of the Kalikasanovela series is my way of doing this—by helping spread awareness about the plastic waste problem in the Philippines,” - Bianca Umali.

It’s not enough to just talk about these advocacies, you also have to practice what you preach. “Understanding that if all of us will do small acts to reduce, reuse, and recycle can have a big positive impact on the environment. I know we can do it. We just have to start now.” - Ruru Madrid

“Instead of using single-use plastics when I eat out or shop, I bring reusable items to reduce my consumption. There are many alternatives to single-use plastics that are readily available in the market from water bottles and utensils to shopping bags. It’s up to us to make that choice to help our planet in our own little ways.” -,” Sofia Pablo

Other SPARKLE artists who starred in the series include Sanya Lopez for Paalam, and Allen Ansay for Sirena. You can watch all Kalikasanovela episodes on GMA 7 and the digital platforms of GMA and Nestlé Philippines.

“We thank GMA Network for sharing our vision of a waste-free future. Our goal for the Kalikasanovela series and this partnership as a whole is to inspire more Filipinos to be part of the solution in addressing the plastic waste problem even in ways as simple as reusing, reducing and recycling plastic waste. We have to remember, tayo ang bida sa ating kwentong pangkalikasan. Together, we have what it takes to create a better world and shape a waste-free future for our children and for generations to come,” said Jose Uy III, SVP & Head of Corporate Affairs of Nestlé Philippines.

(L-R) SPARKLE Artists Allen Ansay, Sofia Pablo, Ruru Madrid, and Bianca Umali, Senior Vice President and Head of Corporate Affairs of Nestlé Philippines Jose Uy III, and Vice President and Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications of GMA Network Angel Javier Cruz answer questions from the media during GMA Network and Nestle Philippines’ Kalikasanovela Launch event.

Last year, 400 GMA employees, including SPARKLE artists, joined sustainability workshops and volunteered in coastal cleanup and tree-growing activities together with Nestlé PH employees and other partners such as the Climate Change Commission (CCC) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Do you segregate your garbage? Does your family practice waste segregation at home? Waste segregation is a must, this should start at home and let your kids participate too!

How We Segregate Our Waste at Home and Letting My Kids Learn More About It with Miming and Friends

Yes, start them young, this is our duty as parents to educate our children about the proper way of garbage disposal. That there are things in our trash that can be recycled, reused, or don't need to be included in the trash collected by the garbage trucks.

Based on reports by WWF-Philippines, the National Solid Waste Management Commission , and the World Bank74% of plastic leakage comes from waste that has been collected. Inconsistent collection and recycling facilities mean that packaging and all other kinds of waste often end up in landfills, communities, or oceans – whether the materials are technically recyclable or not.

Because we know that waste collected from every household will end up in landfills and if we didn't segregate, items that can be recycled will just sit there and add to the pile that may take forever before it decompose (and maybe never) and sadly, some of these garbage ends up in the sea! Yes, to the sea!!!

Watch our video (link here: https://youtu.be/olmDTbY5ycU) and see how easy waste segregation can be. My daughters, Ricci and Chloe were in too. and with this effort, we were able to help even in our own little way to the environment.

The first episode of Miming and Friends supported by MondelÄ“z International was released on World Oceans Day on June 8, 2022 and is the first in a series of five.  It talks about the importance of segregating waste at home, to ensure they don’t end up in the ocean. -read more about it here

Mondelēz International Makes Friends with Miming

Snacks Company MondelÄ“z International is committed to growing its business by making their products in the right way, with a positive impact for people and the planet. The Company calls it “Sustainable Snacking,” with a vision to help create a future where people and the planet thrive. While sustainable snacking covers many areas of its supply chain, one area that the Company is focusing on is packaging. MondelÄ“z International commits that by 2025, 100% of its packaging will be designed to be recycled.

Apart from the Company’s actions to create better and less packaging, it also aims to support net-zero waste through improved systems, aiming for a circular pack economy. They believe in education, of shaping recycling habits early on in childhood so that everyone can contribute to reducing waste today and in the future.

With this goal, MondelÄ“z International has renewed its partnership with the advocacy group Save Philippine Seas (SPS) for educational materials on waste management. This year, the two have collaborated with Miming and Friends, an all-Filipino and homegrown YouTube channel focused on providing valuable lessons to kids through animation and songs.

Miming and Friends on sorting their trash

Continued Partnership with Save Philippine Seas

The first episode of Miming and Friends supported by MondelÄ“z International was released on World Oceans Day on June 8, 2022 and is the first in a series of five.  It talks about the importance of segregating waste at home, to ensure they don’t end up in the ocean. SPS serves as consultant and advisor to the Miming episodes on waste collection. Led by Anna Oposa, Executive Director and “Chief Mermaid,” SPS is an organization that aims to empower citizens towards environmental consciousness, leading to collective action and behavior change. In 2021, MondelÄ“z  International and SPS released a series of infographics sharing the real reasons behind marine litter, entitled “There’s Plenty of Plastics in the Sea; How did this Happen?”

Partnering with Miming and Friends

Miming and Friends, led by Cat-Fish Miming, flying lizard Buboy, and Unicorn Anacorn, join the many friends they meet along the way in learning about the world. Other video topics include values, how to count and sing, and the importance of caring for each other and the environment - all from the multilingual and multicultural perspective of the Filipino experience. The channel is the creation of Miming and Fwends Animation Studios, formed by partners Ramon and Meryll del Prado from Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, “The values we espouse through Miming and Friends very much align with the values of MondelÄ“z International and Save Philippine Seas. We are thrilled about this partnership as it fully synergizes with the greater goal of having responsible children as they grow up to become mindful adults.”

“We are delighted to work with MondelÄ“z International and Miming and Friends for educational videos and songs about caring for our environment, particularly in helping shape waste collection habits early on among children,” adds Oposa. “We support waste collection projects in communities, and we also know that early education plays an important role in empowering everyone to prevent marine litter.”

Oposa ends, “On behalf of MondelÄ“z International, we would like to invite everyone to watch the first episode of our joint effort, and hope kids and adults alike learn from it.”

PAWS launches "Kapon for all Pets" to solve stray problem

Because the root of the problem with stray animals is actually being not able to spay your pets. Yes. For example you have a new pet kitty, so cutie, and sooner or later it'll be able to mature and get pregnant, at first it'll be nice and cute pa din, until you get overwhelmed with the other issues that goes with it like, homing space, food, trips to the vet that also comes with medicines, vaccines, and vitamins and yes with a fee. Some will be lucky enough to find a new home while others ends up in the street.

Many communities all over the country have long dealt with the issue of stray dogs and cats. For many years, the only programs that the local government units (LGUs) have in place are impounding activities and vaccination drives. Unfortunately, these measures only scratch the surface of the issue and do not preventively address the problem of homeless animals at its root.

Again, most of the strays animals come from owned pets. Pets get pregnant or get other pets pregnant and once they give birth, people give the puppies and kittens away. There are always takers for the cute and with breed puppies but when they are all grown up, sometimes they end up on the streets. Spay-Neuter (SN) programs for stray dogs also do not address the problem of stray dogs who end up sick, with a contagious skin problem, or with transmissible venereal tumor since no one really brings them to the vet. The SN groups for stray dogs quickly realize that they are to run as "mini-shelters" themselves, and so they end up bringing the sick dogs to the vet. The SN groups for stray dogs will eventually run out of steam, enthusiasm, manpower, and funding, especially as long as owned pets keep reproducing. Owned pets, therefore, must be spayed or neutered to solve the problem of pet homelessness for the long term.

As part of its mission to prevent cruelty to animals and to offer sustainable solutions to the issue of stray dogs and cats in communities, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has long promoted Spay-Neuter (Kapon) programs for companion animals. Since 2009, PAWS operates a low-cost spay-neuter clinic in Quezon City and gives free spay-neuter to indigent pet owners. In addition, its KabaliCAT” project implements Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-and-Release (TNR) activities for managing stray cats in neighborhoods. Also, all dogs and cats that are available for adoption from PAWSanimal shelter are spayed/neutered.

PAWSNewest Initiative: KAPON FOR ALL PETS”

PAWSnewest campaign is its Kapon for All Pets” program which proposes incentives to be offered by local government units to veterinary clinics operating within their cities and municipalities. A three-way partnership between PAWS and participating LGUs, the program seeks to provide free or affordable kapon procedures for pets owned by the LGUsconstituents.

Virtual PressCon with PAWS’ Executive Director, Anna Cabrera

Participating veterinary clinics within the city or municipality will be working alongside the local government to implement the program. The LGUs that will take part in the program will be included on PAWSList of Progressive Kapon-friendly Cities and Municipalities, a list that the organization will be putting out on all of their social media channels in celebration of World Spay Day on February 22, 2022The first ten (10) LGUs to implement the Kapon for All Pets fiscal and non-fiscal incentives will receive P50,000 worth of surgery materials from PAWS and a plaque of recognition as a Pioneer KAPON FOR ALL PETS LGU Partner”.

PAWS believes that providing free or affordable kapon for pets is the long-term and sustainable solution to pet homelessness. It is not having bigger pounds, turning pounds into shelters, or putting up new signages proclaiming that a building is now an animal rehabilitation center. Kapon for All Pets” is proof that private-public partnerships can promote animal welfare, which is directly connected to public health issues and the eradication of rabies. LGUs that are interested to work with PAWS to implement the Kapon for All Pets” campaign within their jurisdiction may email PAWSExecutive Director, Anna Cabrera at kapon@paws.org.ph.

Through this newly-launched corporate social responsibility program, scholars will bask in the same ALAGANG SILKA, that will now not only transform them physically and emotionally, but can enrich their lives.

Because to nurture scholars  with ALAGANG SILKA stands to produce fruits that multiply. SILKA ALAGA scholars are bound to uplift, not only themselves, but also their families, their communities, and their country. For this reason alone, the determination to nurture them becomes  its own reward.  Aalagaan ang pag-aaral ng mga college students na ito, para mapaganda ang kanilang buhay at upang sila rin ang mag-aalaga sa susunod naman sa kanilang yapak. (Their college education will be cared for, so they can live better lives and they too can care for those who follow in their footsteps). With the SILKA ALAGA Scholarship Program, Silka expresses ALAGA by giving back, and makes ALAGA a way of life for the ones whose dreams of living better need fruition.

Since its inception in 2001, Silka, a beauty and skincare brand, has been creating a superior line of affordable and effective products that are easily accessible and within the reach of consumers, helping them achieve lighter and smoother skin complexions, naturally.

Inspired by its 20th anniversary, Silka will be searching for 20 college scholars from all over the country. This nationwide search will find five (5) scholars each from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and Metro Manila. All scholars will be provided a fixed amount for their  tuition fees and allowances, so that they can be supported in their studies, as they get closer and closer to their dreams.
