LRMC launches ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan,’ turning every ride into a history lesson
LRT-1 private operator Light Rail Manila Corporation
(LRMC) officially launches ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan,’ a creative advocacy project
that transforms the daily commute into an immersive journey through Philippine
history and culture.
Anchored on the LRT-1’s designation as the Heritage Line,
which traverses numerous historical and tourism landmarks, the project revolves
around the idea that every ride connects passengers to history and tourism.
“The LRT-1 is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a moving historical corridor. Passing through various universities and Manila’s historic areas, we recognized an opportunity to bring history closer to the younger generation,” LRMC External Relations Head Atty. Elaine B. Tiu said. “With ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan,’ we are inserting vital factual information into the daily routine of our commuters, addressing the need for accessible education about our country’s relevant places and people. This project truly embodies our commitment to making history a part of every Filipino’s journey.”
‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan’ is executed in partnership with DDB
Philippines and heritage advocacy group Renacimiento Manila. The core of the
project involves integrating voice-over trivia on Philippine history into the
public address (PA) systems of select LRT-1 Generation 4 trains.
"LRMC envisioned ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan’ as a journey back to our roots—a highlight on the people and places that built the Philippines. We believe that to truly understand our development as a nation, one must know the heroes who paved the way and the hallowed grounds where history was made. This is an exploration of the legacy that lives on in all of us,” DDB Philippines Deputy Executive Creative Director Jacqueline Caccam said.
These history soundbites, which are brief and highly
relevant, will be automatically played after the usual ‘next station’
announcements, utilizing a signaling-based system. The content is specifically
curated to relate to the place or notable person that the subsequent train stop
is named after, effectively using the train’s PA system to educate passengers –
a majority of whom are students – on significant aspects of the Philippines’
past, its heroes, and the sites of historical events.
“The ‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan’ project greatly contributes to a deeper understanding not only of the history of LRT-1, but also of the place names that live on through its stations. These names—and the stories behind them—offer valuable insight into the history of Manila and its neighboring cities. By presenting this information in a way that is accessible to everyday commuters, the project helps reconnect the public with the heritage they encounter on their daily journeys, from historical figures to historical events and famed locations. Renacimiento Manila fully supports this meaningful initiative by the LRMC,” Renacimiento Manila President & Co-Founder Diego Torres said.
LRMC continues to champion tourism, arts, and culture
through different initiatives. This new project complements the ongoing LRT-1
ikotMNL Heritage Transit Tour with Renacimiento Manila, which offers monthly
guided tours visiting key tourist spots located near LRT-1 stations.
Furthermore, LRMC recently supported the historical film ‘Lakambini,’ which
chronicles the life of Filipina revolutionary Gregoria De Jesus.
‘LRT-1 KasakaySayan’ is the latest endeavor by LRMC to
ensure that the LRT-1 Heritage Line not only offers efficient transport but
also serves as an engaging platform for cultural and historical appreciation,
reminding commuters that their ride is truly a ride with history.
