In today’s busy, fast-paced, and ever-changing world, we tend to pack our schedule to fit everything we need to do in a day. Everything has to be done rapidly, giving birth to quickie versions of everything like 5-minute workouts and 30-minute meals. For the life insurance industry, this can be a major challenge as it usually takes several days at least for applications to be processed. Add to that the difficulty of social distancing restrictions, then you really have a problem.

AIA PHILAM LIFE: Protecting Filipinos in Just 20 Minutes

Fortunately, AIA Philam Life, the country's premiere life insurance company has adapted to this lifestyle and now has a platform that can provide customers a way to protect themselves and their families under the same time it takes to buy coffee and finish it before it gets cold—all within the comforts of their own home.

“The pandemic served as the catalyst that pushed us to beef up our digital capabilities quickly. As soon as the physical distancing measures were put in place, we knew we had to respond with speed and ended up launching the enhanced digital selling platform (the precursor of coffee closing), our Facebook Messenger chatbot, claims and policy requests online via email, among others, within two months of the quarantine. Some of these were already in development and the situation forced us to be ready to launch as soon as possible,” shared Kelvin Ang, AIA Philam Life Chief Executive Officer.

“When we did this event last year, we were happy to announce the completion of our customers’ digital journey with us. This year, the focus is how to further improve and streamline our processes to ensure that our customers have the best experience with us. And with a customer-centric approach to these efforts, fulfilling our mission of racing against risk and helping more Filipinos live Healthier, Longer, and Better Lives becomes faster and so much easier,” he added.

Faster Way to Get Protected

In the past, a traditional life insurance policy application can take almost a month or so to wind its way through the application procedure which involves physically meeting with a financial advisor, submitting a lot of paperwork and exchanging printed proposals, before it gets to the tedious underwriting process, and paying your bill. AIA Philam Life's Coffee Closing Project simplified this into a three-step, 20-minute process which includes e-Submission and e-Signature where the client can review all the information they provided and acknowledge the agreement, e-Payment where the customer pays via debit or credit card, and Auto Underwrite which finalizes their insurance policy. All of this can be done through AIA Philam Life’s iPad-based interactive Point- of-Sale (iPoS) tool and a secure link provided by the financial advisor.

At the heart of Coffee Closing is Fusion, the first AI (artificial intelligence)-powered and award- winning digital underwriting platform in the industry which helps validate insurance applications in a faster, more reliable, and accurate manner.

Fusion has been proven to process 3,000 life insurance applications per second and 60,000 times faster than the traditional manual underwriting procedure. By transcending rule-based automation and using superior cognitive automation, the system learns patterns from analyzing a hundred years’ worth of AIA customer data to bring a century’s worth of knowledge into the present.

“Since 2012, we’ve been continuously upgrading and improving our digital platforms to make sure that our people are equipped with best in class tools that can enable them to provide a seamless experience to our customers,” said Margarita Lopez, AIA Philam Life Chief Operations Officer.

“And to make sure that we are not making assumptions on what is important for them , we involved our customers at the very heart of our design, reimagining what we could do to address what matters to them. The result is a completely delightful digital experience for customers and for our financial advisors alike,” she shares.

AIA Philam Life will continue to strengthen its digital capability as the company announced digitalization as one of its strategic imperatives.

“Technology, Data and Analytics will be the driving force that will enable our plans moving forward. AIA Philam Life intends to be at the forefront and lead in digitalization for the life insurance industry,” said AIA Philam Life Chief Technology Officer Emmanuel Mendoza.

Understanding Mental Health and its Value to Your Overall Well-being

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic began, the Philippines already had one of the highest rates of depression in Southeast Asia, with more than three million Filipinos afflicted with the illness. Health experts say that anxiety, depression, and insomnia have become more prevalent among Filipinos in the past seven months since the pandemic began.

Based on the PhilCare CQ Study, which was conducted during the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) period, 95.9 percent of Filipinos surveyed were worried about the health of their loved ones.

Furthermore, nine out of ten respondents (89.9%) were “anxious about getting COVID-19.” Half of the 800 people nationwide who were surveyed (49.1%) also reported that their sleeping habits had "gone bad.” Practically half (45.5%) also said that they were having difficulty concentrating on daily tasks.

Worsening Situation
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health (DOH), the number of Filipinos calling support hotlines (for mental distress and suicide) has risen from a pre-pandemic average of 80 calls a month to 400 calls a month during the pandemic itself.

This has prompted warnings from doctors that there is a need for healthcare providers to focus on providing support and treatment for these disorders--all of which fall within the category of mental illnesses.

It is rather sad and worrisome that for so long mental health has been largely ignored or at most, taken for granted, by many Filipinos. This is due to several factors including ignorance, wrong ideas about how our minds and brains work, superstitious beliefs, and the shame and stigma associated with mental illness.

For example, many Filipinos, including parents and community or religious leaders, don't quite understand that anxiety and depression are real illnesses. Many of them think that a person going through these are just lazy, weak, or "nag-iinarte" or "nagda-drama lang." This has caused many Filipinos with anxiety and depression to fail to seek treatment.

This wrong thinking (that depression and anxiety are not "real" illnesses) leads to another wrong notion: that a person with depression or anxiety can just "snap out" of it using willpower or by distracting or entertaining themselves.

Mental illness is the result of psychological trauma, physical injury, stress, or genetic factors that affect our brains and our minds. When untreated, mental illness can result in mild to moderate to severe symptoms that include insomnia, depression, anxiety, hallucinations, delusions, psychosis, and suicide. According to the DOH, intentional self-harm or suicide has become the ninth leading cause of death among Filipinos 20-24 years old. Globally, the WHO has stated that Depression leading to Suicide has now become the second leading cause of death for those aged 18 to 34. These trends are extremely alarming and need to addressed immediately.

Break The Stigma, Normalize Mental Health
Many Filipinos who are experiencing mental health symptoms do not seek help because they feel ashamed. They're afraid of being thought of as "crazy" by their family, relatives, and friends. They are afraid that their employers and co-workers would think they are incompetent and unfit to work if they are diagnosed with anxiety, depression, bipolar, or some other mental illness.

In other words, if we are ever going to help reduce the incidents of mental illness, it will take more than just medical treatment or pharmaceutical interventions. The basic step towards a solution is to help society accept the reality of mental illness and make it as "ordinary" as any other disease that affects any of the body's organs. When we break the stigma, we can make mental health a normal priority and preoccupation for all Filipinos.

Other important factors preventing those in need from seeking help are Accessibility and Affordability.

This is why it's important for health maintenance organizations (HMOs) to step in and include among their benefits the treatment and support for those under mental and emotional distress. It sends a clear message that depression, anxiety, bipolar, panic attacks, and other mental illnesses are simply part of life and should not be considered shameful.

Moreover, data shows that many of the symptoms referred to HMO care are assigned treatments that are for physical illnesses, when in fact, the symptoms are actually being caused by a mental illness. Mental disorders are known to trigger symptoms not just in the mind but in the body as well.

For example, a person who is depressed may have headaches and feel physically exhausted. On the other hand, a person with anxiety may have difficulty breathing. A person who is having a panic attack may feel chest tightness or even chest pain—and some of them mistakenly think they are having a heart attack.

Furthermore, good mental health directly impacts physical health. And a positive mental outlook can help those who are dealing with an accident or physical illness to recover more quickly and more successfully.

The lack of awareness or perspective on mental health may lead both the patient and the HMO staff to think that in these hypothetical instances, the cause of symptoms could be migraine or asthma, or a heart condition. The exhaustion may be attributed to some other physical condition. As a result, the patient and HMO expend energy, resources, and time on tests that seek to rule out a physical ailment—only when all these tests are done, and the costs paid for, will a mental illness be considered as the cause.

This is a rather inefficient, perhaps even wasteful, approach. Wouldn’t it be better if the possibility of a mental illness was considered early on—so that it can either be ruled out or verified sooner? If so, the patient gets the proper and effective treatment right away.

Spotting a mental illness like anxiety or depression sooner can also help reduce the cost of treatment. For example, a person who is mildly depressed and suffers from insomnia, headaches, and exhaustion can benefit from a treatment comprised of regular physical exercise, shifting to a healthier diet, a change of pace at work  or at home, getting quality sleep, and learning effective psychological coping strategies when dealing with stress. All that might cost significantly lower compared to repeated trips to the hospital and having multiple diagnostic tests.

We should all consider having an annual Mental Wellness checkup, just like we would have an annual Physical checkup. This kind of preventative maintenance approach is a must for maintaining our vehicles, so why not for our bodies and minds as well, to make sure we stay in good form, and ready for the challenges ahead?

HeyPhil Mind Care Program: PhilCare, which undertook the study, is using the report's findings to design supportive interventions for those who are going through psychological and emotional distress.

"Mental and emotional distress do not happen spontaneously. There are genetic, physical, and environmental factors that trigger such distress. Ideally, a person should get help as early as possible so that their symptoms do not get worse," said PhilCare President and CEO Jaeger L. Tanco.

This is why PhilCare has partnered with MyGolana to  launched its HeyPhil Mind Care Program, which utilizes advanced technologies, licensed and experienced counselors and best practices, to assist those just wanting a mental health checkup for which is a set of interventions that begin with counseling sessions for those experiencing mental and emotional distress, and may be needing appropriate interventions. Besides counseling, PhilCare has also begun a series of free webinars that teach people the basics of mental health and how they can get help for psychological and emotional challenges.

PhilCare’s free webinar "No One Left Behind: Mental Health is Everyone's Responsibility" is an excellent starting point for anyone who wishes to understand mental health and how to achieve it for oneself and for loved ones. It's now available for viewing at PhilCare's Facebook Page

Major takeaways from the webinar include:
  1. Love and respect for each other as the foundation of mental health
  2. The foundation of mental health should be laid firmly in the family and nurtured through childhood and adolescence
  3. The workplace can make or break mental health; employers and employees have to create an environment that promotes proper thinking, a safe space for expressing and processing emotions, and protocols for managing stress
  4. It's okay to not be okay--and to seek help from family and friends, and if necessary counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists, when going through mental and emotional distress.

Understanding Mental Health and Its Value To Your Overall Well-being

1st ko si Third Movie / Third is my First on Netflix

I recently watched the movie 1st ko si Third on Netflix. I thought fun-fun lang na movie ito like kilig here and there. The movie seemed to be focusing on Cory's life being at home after retirement with his husband Alejandro (Dante Rivero), and reminiscing the thought of her first love / the one that got away peg nicknamed (Third) "III" (Freddie Webb)

Reasons Why Alejandro is the Best Man at 1st ko si Third Movie

Cory & Third

Cute-cute lang yung scene and medyo relatable sya for me lalo na that I grew up with my Nanay and Tatay. and also, when Pappi was still here, may mga ganaps na ganun din sya towards Mudrabells.

1st ko si Third Movie / Third is my First on Netflix
Cory & Maria

Isang araw, nakita ni Cory si Third, and from afar tinanaw nya lang slight. And carry on with her day. But later on, Cory learned about Facebook and created her own account with the help of her apo. Alam nyo na what's next. She sent a friend request kay Third! Yas and Third accepted it naman! Chat-Chat sila after... Ang harot ng lola mo! Minus 10 Points!

1st ko si Third Movie / Third is my First on Netflix
Third

But when she was invited for a reunion with high school classmates, she declined. In fairness kay Cory, very good sya dun making iwas kay Third. So, Cory may 10 Points ka jan! Na-redeem and sarili.

1st ko si Third Movie / Third is my First on Netflix
The letters Cory wrote for Third

Back story: they were about to be on their first date and to attend their prom. Kaso something happened at di na natuloy, after that, never na sila nag kita ata ulit ever. And III went to the states na. But now that III is back, nalilito na ba sya? And with these lines from her beshie Maria, good luck if di ka ma'torn.

Maria: "Sa punto ng buhay natin, mas masarap yung binabalikan yung nakaraan lalo na kung nagbibigay ito ng kaligayahan kahit sandali lang"

Let's jump to a different scene, yung time na tinanong sya ni Maria about her feelings towards Alejandro...

"Kung minsan nagsasama and mga tao dahil mahal nila ang isat isa. Kung minsan naman nagsasama sila dahil wala na lang silang mapiling iba at dumarating ang panahon na nagsasama sila ng maayos para sa isat isa" Cory

But Maria is being a good friend na banda here:

"Ang pagmamahal sa isang tao at pagaalaga din sa halaman kailangan araw araw diniligan mo, inaalagaan, araw araw naghahanap ka ng dahilan ng paraan para maramdaman mong nagmamahal ka pa rin at minahamahal mo ang taong napili mong makasamasa buhay. pero hindi mo dapat ibuhos ang kahat kailngan may itira ka din para sa sarili mo, mahalaga yun" Maria

Lines with Cory and he Niece.

Cory: Paulit ulit ka ng niloloko, Paulit ulit mo namang tinatanggap? Niece: "Mahal ko si Randy, ganun talaga siguro no, kapag nagpakasal ka sa isang tao, habang buhay mo ng pasang krus"

Hay nako, I've learned na ilang years na din since this movie was shown and they just recently been picked up by Netflix and baka meron pang gaya ko na late bloomer sa mga ganitong theme so stop na muna sa other details and magfocus na tayo on Why I think Alejandro is the Best Man for Cory.

Bagot na si Cory staying home, but Alejandro seems to calm her down naman saying: Ganun lang talaga sa umpisa... ito ang buhay nating talaga ang tumada tayong magkasaba dito sa bahay...
1 Point!

1st ko si Third Movie / Third is my First on Netflix
Cory & Alejandro

Hindi ba't nangako tayo sa isa't isa nung ikinasal tayo, na magsasama tayo hanggang kamatayan?

Cory & Alejandro

At dahil jan 100 Points!!! Ako kinilig pero parang di feel si Cory ang lines ni Alejandro dito. Ang sad!

Sa scene na irita much na si Cory: "Pakiramdam ko wlaa akong silbi...pakiramdam ko nakakulong ako dito sa bahay. Alejandro said "Pinaparamdam ko ba sa iyo yun? and I was like ...Awwwwwww!

A scene with Ton where Alejandro is fixing their Car: "Alam mo Ton, ang isang bagay na kaya mo pang ayusin, kaya mo pang sagipin. Tiyaga lang yan"

So nagpamake-over ang Lola Cory nyo and nagulat si Lolo Alejandro... so bago pa maimbyerna si Lola Cory...

Alejandro: Coring, kahit na ano pang ayos ng buhok mo, ikaw pa din pinakamagandang babae sa buhay ko.

Alejandro finally fixes their car and went for a ride with Cory. Yes, agad-agad and super excited because Cory wants to learn to drive too :) Inalala din ang first date nila and other moments. plus planning on things they'll do in the future.

1st ko si Third Movie / Third is my First on Netflix

Now let's make tanaw naman  about Third.

Third seems like palabiro but his jokes are not so mabenta to Cory, Very charming sa paharana (wayback) and so thoughtful din sya sa pa-chocolates on the present day. For me, parang medyo touchy and a hint of something else si III. Here are some lines sa kanilang pagkikita.

1st ko si Third Movie | Third & Cory

Third: "When things don't work out, you might as well separate. You have to move on" that's what he said after saying he's divorced for years. He also invited Cory to visit him sa states saying: Why don't you go visit the states, pasyal kita, I'm gonna take care of you. Cory: Hindi naman ganun kadali... Third answered: I said I will take care of you, Don't worry.

IDK if it's just me pero di ko bet parang na awkward na ewan. And I don't know if yun din ba ang nafeel ni Cory that made her burn all her letters and magCry-la ng bongga sa car.

In my own interpretation: I think Cory finally saw the difference between Alejandro and Third or Not. I have to rewatch it 3times, to listen carefully and observe signs and hints lalo na yung mga eksenang walang dialogue involve. Seems like masyadong nainlove or stuck sa idea of being in love lalo na the first love thought. Also, highschool pa sya when she experienced that someone cared for her the way Third. And maybe na-romanticized na as if no one else comes close. Kaya kahit Alejandro is there di nya nakikita ang efforts at gestures nito.

Alejandro naman is very good regarding attention to detail. Tanda nya how their first date went. And mga bet na gawin ni Cory like learning how to drive, visit different churches, and go to Palawan.

1st ko si Third | Alejandro & Cory
This final scene, nung una di ko ma-gets, I messaged my friends who's in to movies like this and ask for what they can say about it. Na-puzzled ako much kasi nga bitin sa lines and being a taurean who overthinks, kung ano anong possibilities na alng naisip ko. But after rewatching nga for the third time, I think this scene says that Cory is choosing Alejandro. (aside sa pag burn nya ng letters) And she sat closer to her husband unlike sa first scene ng movie.  OMG halata bang super nagustuhan ko this movie at na pablog post ako ng di oras :D Panoodin nyo din please and let me know what you think about it. Feel free to leave comments.
